Prinsco Helps Track Campaign Achieve Another Milestone

As seen in Jesup Citizen Herald

The "Get Back On The Track...Fast!" campaign received another big boost recently when local tile manufacturer and campaign supporter, Prinsco, Inc., donated all of the water management materials required for the future all-weather track, a market value of approximately $45,000!

Jesup Community School alumni and Director IS for Prinsco, Randy McGill, said "Prinsco, Inc. is pleased to help support the campaign to build a new, state-of-the-art all-weather track in the Jesup community. Prinsco proudly contributes to the communities in which we operate and we feel this is a worthy project. We wish the athletic programs at Jesup Community School the best of luck in the classroom and on the field of competition."

Prinsco's donation is one of the largest received during the campaign but was not the only received during the past several weeks. Campaign co-chairperson Luke Baldwin said of the many donations, "The generosity Prinsco has shown is outstanding. We are extremely appreciative of the support this local business has given. We continue to receive donations of all sizes, public and private, sometimes several in a day, and we can't emphasize enough the importance of ALL donations, regardless of size. Our hope is that folks will continue to support the campaign at whatever level they're able."

The support received throughout the past several weeks has helped the "Get Back On The Track...Fast!" campaign reach yet another important milestone. As of November 2nd, the campaign has brought in over $637,000, 80% of the $800,000 goal. Campaign co-chairperson Rachel Dahl exclaimed, "The support is tremendous! It's exciting to think how close we are, yet we know this last 20% will be the most challenging to raise and we need the community's support now more than ever."

The campaign committee continues to meet nearly every week, refining the fundraising blueprint as they enter the final stage of the campaign. Baldwin concluded his statement by saying "We have every intention to finish what we've started and bring this community a walking/running facility that they can be proud to call their own. Thank you to everyone for your continued support."

Jesup raising money for all-weather running track

JESUP (KWWL) -

After an impressive showing at the state track meet, one eastern Iowa school district is looking to update its athletic facilities.

Last week the Jesup girl's track team finished seventh in the state meet, with one state champion and two state runners-up. One member of the boys track team also qualified for the state meet. That's a huge accomplishment in itself, but they did it all while practicing on their school's dirt track.

During the past couple of years the Jesup Community School District has been fixing up a number of their facilities by remodeling the school and building new baseball and softball fields. Now they want to focus on the track and field.

It's been since 1997 that Jesup has been able to host a track meet in Jesup.

"This spring has been especially poor as far as the weather helping us out so we had to be creative in finding different ways to work out," said Athletic Director, and Head Girl's Track Coach, Lisa Loecher.

Now a group of community members have gotten together, working to raise $800,000 to put in a state-of-the-art all-weather track. The new track will have a hard surface, better drainage, and new field event areas.

"Everybody in this community feels a little bit of a responsibility to do what they can do to ensure the long-term success of their students and student athletes," said Co-Chair of Get Back On The Track Fast Committee, Luke Baldwin.

Those in Jesup say the track will make the community more appealing and healthy.

"This is really the last piece of the puzzle and it really puts us on the map as far as a very nice school system to get your kids involved in," said Baldwin.

"Extremely excited and hopefully we'll get that finished up in our three year place and like I said it would just be great," said Loecher.

Right now, Jesup has to rent Independence's track to host home meets.

Jesup track Committee announces that work is underway

The committee formed to raise funds for a new all-weather track at the Jesup Community School announced this week that work is underway to launch a school district wide capital campaign. The Get Back On The Track…Fast! “Invest in a Healthier Community” campaign committee has been working since January to get to this point.

According to committee co-chairperson Luke Baldwin, “There is a great deal of preparation that goes into the organizational phase of a capital campaign. Our committee members are working with the school board to finalize several items before we launch the campaign to the school district residents.”

The committee’s fundraising effort began earlier this winter when they commissioned an Iowa based fund development company to conduct a Fundraising Feasibility Study.

“The results of the Study were very positive,” said co-chairperson Rachel Dahl. “Ninety-three (93) percent of those interviewed indicated that they thought the district residents would financially support this project and it is possible to raise the necessary money privately to complete our project. Even more encouraging is the fact that ninety-six (96) percent of those interviewed indicated that they would consider or actually make a financial gift to the campaign. These results have given our committee a great deal of positive energy.”

The committee has proposed a plan that includes:

  • All demolition and site preparation of the present track
  • Installation of a new eight-lane synthetic track with a concrete border outlining the perimeter edges
  • A new Press/Coaches Box
  • A new handicapped accessible area for fan seating
  • Drainage updates
  • Football field rework
  • New field events areas
  • New perimeter fencing and landscaping

The estimated cost of this project is $800,000,” said Dahl. “Our project does a great deal more than just provide a track for our students and residents. We have listed below the positives our project would bring to our school district.”

These benefits include:

  • Eliminate the expense of paying rent to access other tracks in other school districts
  • Hosting our own track events will enable concession stand profits to remain in our district and will be utilized for future resurfacing cost. Presently the host school retains all of the profit generated from our track meets
  • Allow our School District to host our own events as well as District events for both boys and girls
  • Address present safety concerns
  • Handicapped accessibility will allow all students, athletes and community members to enjoy the new track and surrounding areas
  • Increase visibility making our new facility more fan and athlete friendly
  • Up-grade the atmosphere of our Athletic Complex which should affect the overall image of our School District to prospective families with children looking to move to our community
  • Provide a facility that can be utilized by all of our students as well as all members of the school district
  • Training on a “slow” track, then competing on a “fast” track greatly affects a runner’s timing, especially on relay handoffs and the number of steps between hurdles
  • Documentation shows that faster times are run on all-weather tracks. Therefore, a new track increases the chance for Jesup athletes to be competitive within the district and qualify for the Drake Relays or the State Meet
  • The Jesup community as a whole will benefit from a new track through walking/running clubs, the ability to host various community events, including the Relay for Life event, and much more
  • The new track will require improved drainage, benefiting the football field, baseball field and softball fields

Baldwin wrapped things up by saying, “Presently, Jesup is 1 of only 4 schools that have not installed an all-weather track in our current 16-team conference. All of our meets are run on all-weather tracks, including conference, district and state. It’s time to make our facilities competitive with those of the teams we compete against. Our school has reached the point where something needs to be done; we need to all work together to: Get Back On The Track…Fast! & “Invest in a Healthier Community.”

Fundraising to get underway for Jesup all-weather track

Published in the Citizen Herald Oct. 28, 2009

A campaign called “Get Back on the Track ... Fast!” is being launched to raise funds for a new all-weather track at Jesup Community Schools.

The first fundraising effort will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28 at the Jesup Golf and Country Club, and will include a Fiesta dinner and a chance to win up to $2,000 cash!

The purpose of the fundraising is to bring a state-of-the-art, all-weather running track to the Jesup community that can be used by the school for physical education, athletic training and events, and by the citizens for the betterment of their health.

“We see the track as a great resource for not only the school, but the community as a whole,” said one of the organizers, Luke Baldwin, resident of Jesup and an alumni of Jesup High School.

According to organizer Dick Fratzke, also a resident of Jesup and an alumni of Jesup High School, the estimates for the cost of the track are around $700,000.

“This would include site preparation and demolition, the eight-lane synthetic track surface with concrete around the perimeter edges, press box, drainage updates, field event areas, football field rework, fencing and landscaping,” Fratzke said.

“Many communities that have the all-weather track state that many people have formed walking clubs that meet at the track to get their exercise in with some camaraderie and conversation,” said Lisa Loecher, Jesup Athletic Director and Middle School Principal. “Their senior citizens enjoy the track because of the even surfaces. And communities have also used it for events such as Relay for Life.”

The goal of the committee is to offset as much of the cost of the track as possible through the giving of time, talent, expertise, equipment and monetary donations by the community. No start or finish date has been set, but a very loose time frame for the construction is 3-5 years.

The fundraising event on Saturday, Nov. 28 is the first effort by the committee. Two hundred tickets, at $100 each, will be sold. Those who purchase the $100 tickets will be treated to a big Mexican meal, free beverages, entertainment and a chance to win one of four cash prizes:
$2,000, $1,000 and two $500 awards.

Anyone who purchases a $100 ticket may then purchase an additional $25 companion ticket, which will be good for the meal and free drinks.

For tickets or additional information, please call 827-1700, ext. 1203. This is a limited ticket event, so call soon and help your community get back on the track ... fast!
